Pledge overview
Indonesia, an archipelago of diverse islands, stands as a stunning mosaic of rich biodiversity, home to an astounding array of plant and animal life. Its status as an island nation nurtures unique ecosystems, fostering a tapestry of biodiversity found across its many terrains. Renowned for its expansive mangroves and vast forests, decades of deforestation have left a mark on Indonesia’s landscape. Yet, the country treasures these natural wonders and recognizes their significance in sustaining ecological balance and providing habitats for countless species. The Indonesian government has set ambitious targets for reforestation, and it is our firm belief that GoTo needs to support these efforts to safeguard our ecosystems and nurture a sustainable future for generations to come.
GoTo is a digital ecosystem in Indonesia, with our ecosystem comprising on-demand transport, food delivery, logistics and fulfillment and financial services, among others. As such, our primary approach for reforestation includes facilitating consumers’ collective action through features in our digital ecosystem, like the GoGreener Tree Collective, which enables customers to plant trees when they travel through our ride-hailing services or order food on our platform. Customers are given the option to voluntarily activate this feature–offsetting the emissions when they use our on-demand services. To date, one million of our customers have enabled the GoGreener Tree Collective as their default when transacting on our platform.
Various kinds of trees are planted, ranging from mangroves by the ocean to prosperous fruit trees near villages, in regulated conservation areas across Indonesia with careful consideration for biodiversity and the development of local communities. We involve local farmers, academics, and residents to provide meaningful economic opportunities through our programs and ensure the sustainability of the trees planted. These programs are facilitated through our technology-driven partner, Jejakin, where the trees are monitored using a technology-enabled monitoring system that helps identify and analyze tree growth, soil, and air quality, and the amount of carbon absorbed. These data points are shared with users through a dashboard for each tree planted, and registered to account for contributions towards the government’s national targets.
Through this united endeavor, GoTo commits to planting an additional one million trees by the end of 2030.

Additional details
Tree planting is executed every month through our partner Jejakin at various mutually-agreed locations. Each tree planted is monitored using Jejakin’s technology and its data is shared with GoTo through a dashboard with details on tree location, type, and even complementary satellite imagery. The goal would be to enable, through our customers, the planting of at least 180,000 trees per year.

Our programs are dedicated to not only planting one kind of tree, but a variety of kinds best suited for the different locations and communities we select to ensure biodiversity and local needs are met. With help from Jejakin, our team surveys locations and gathers information to formulate the best options to plant trees and support local communities.
Jejakin is a B-corp certified company and our tree planting programs are registered to the national government registry in line with standards from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
