Davos, Switzerland, 16 January 2024 – Conserving and restoring degraded forest landscapes is essential to safeguarding livelihoods, combating global climate change and preventing biodiversity loss. 1t.org has announced today at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting the historic milestone of more than 100 companies pledging to conserve, restore and grow trees and forests with the newest pledges from Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Burberry China, GoTo Group, RPG Enterprises and Vale.
1t.org is the trillion trees platform of the World Economic Forum. It serves the global movement to conserve, restore and grow a trillion trees by 2030, in support of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.
“We are delighted to celebrate the milestone of 12 billion trees pledged by over 100 companies, and we look forward to welcoming further pledgers in the coming years,” said Nicole Schwab, Co-Head of the Nature Positive Pillar at the World Economic Forum. “The private sector has a catalytic role to play in climate action and ecosystem restoration by investing in the trillion trees movement.”
As a founding partner of 1t.org and the first pledging company to 1t.org, Salesforce has been leading the trillion trees movement with its commitment to help fund 100 million trees conserved, restored and grown by 2030. Suzanne DiBianca, EVP and Chief Impact Officer, Salesforce said, “Forests are not just trees; they are the lungs of our Earth, protecting biodiversity, supporting communities, and mitigating climate change. At Salesforce, we believe in the power of collective climate action, and through 1t.org, we're making strides toward a sustainable and equitable future for all. We’re proud that 1t.org has reached its 100th pledge milestone, a testament to the collective commitment towards protecting forest ecosystems.”
Entering its fourth year since launch, the World Economic Forum’s trillion trees platform, 1t.org, has achieved 12 billion trees pledged in over 100 countries by the private sector to support livelihoods and ecosystem restoration. Sharing commitments transparently can inspire the global community to learn, act, improve and increase ambition.
Among the new pledges announced at the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting 2024, GoTo became the first Indonesian company to pledge mangrove restoration to 1t.org and so contributing to the Mangrove Breakthrough. “Indonesia has incredibly rich biodiversity and it is up to each and every one of us to ensure we protect it, so we can build a sustainable world for future generations,” said Tanah Sullivan, Group Head of Sustainability, GoTo. “As the country’s largest digital ecosystem, GoTo is proud to be part of the 1t.org movement, as we actively work towards our goal of empowering people across Indonesia to conserve, restore and grow an additional one million trees by the end of 2030.”
At a time when $44 trillion of the global economy is at risk from nature loss, Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) represent a key strategy and roadmap to address the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss and strengthen the resilience of the world’s socio-economic systems. As more and more companies establish their nature and climate strategies, there is a growing interest in ecosystem conservation and restoration investments. This is particularly the case in India as evidenced by new study conducted by 1t.org on “Unlocking Private Sector Investment into Natural Climate Solutions in India” in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industries and IORA Ecological Solution.
1t.org pledgers track and report the implementation of their pledges on an annual basis. For the first time, we are publishing today the 1t.org implementation dashboard showing the private sector’s aggregate impact on the trillion trees movement. Among the 27 companies who shared the financial spending associated with their 1t.org pledge, investment in conservation, restoration and supporting activities exceeded USD 130 million. 81% companies report that they are fully on track with their pledge implementation and 19% somewhat on track. The analysis covers activities from 2020 to 2023.
